sure I speak for most. I was on the ship pretty much all of 1968, and was
discharged a month early due to the ship's departure for Japan. I was an ETN2
working in the OE division and my claim to OKC fame was determining how much of
the superstructure to remove for our 1968 trip up the Columbia River. I ended up
taking off the URD4 radio direction finder antenna and the TACAN array. Boy, was
I looking up when we passed under those bridges! She was a great ship. May she
rest in peace under those 1000 fathoms of water off Guam. Our hearts will always
be with her.

enough to spend a foggy day at sea for dependants day on the OKC. So many
memories! The best had to be standing on the bank of the Columbia riv r watching
the OKC make its way up river for the Portland Rose Festival in June of 1968.

Comments: I have been searching for OKC reunions and have finally
come across this web site. After spending over 10 years of my navy career on the
Okie Boat I have a lot of nostalgia for the old girl, and was extremely sadden
about her demise as a target. Those 1 years were the best of my career and I
will never forget all my shipmates I worked alongside and hit the beach with in
every port in the far east. When I decommissioned her in 79, it was like losing
a best friend, so I put in a work request and had teak wood installed on the
Quarterdecks of my next ship, USS Blue Ridge, to privately have a reminder of
the OKC for all those of us who crossed decked. The rallying cry in the Chiefs
mess was "It wasn't like this on the Okie Boat. So many more stories and m
mories are waiting to be told, but enough for now. I congratulate you on the
website. Great job, only to get better.

you in 71, "kaki is not a good color to wear for the crossing" I slept in the
Penthouse so it was good to see a foto of George LUHRS, I'm sure you have heard
him with his "right full whistle, two toots on the rudder, all back full, sound
the collison alarm",after we took out a camel and some pilings while leave Yoko.

Comments: I remember my first night aboard, the ship was in San
Diego at North Island. I wanted to make a good impression on the Quarterdeck so
I popped a snappy salute to the fantail then the OOD. He then informed me that
at 2330 there is no flag to salute on the antail! Oh well I made my impression!
Thus my first experience on the good ol' Okie Boat! Great spot you have here!
Looking forward to seeing you at the reunion! Jim Blackburn

Comments: Viewing brought back alot of memories, some good &
some bad which is normal I guess. I was Black Gang and climbed those boiler
faces many times while we were in combat. When pictures were taken of ship's
company I was in school in GLAKES Ill. so I was a little dissapointed not to see
myself at that young age. Glad to know that you are doing well!

Comments: Dave, Thanks for your interest in keeping our "life and
times" aboard the Okie Boat alive! In retrospect, where else could young men
have had such adventure? Who but the Navy would have given us those E-Ticket
rides in the Tonkin Gulf? And why did we not have our heads examined for signing
up in the first place? Your heart would have broken had you seen the bridge in
February - stripped and broken. I hope someone had the foresight to save the
helm and engine-order telegraph for the museum!

Comments: As I reach my final days of active duty, I start to act
like my father. I seek out info on the places I've been stationed and the folks
who were there with me. OKC was my first ship (7/76-9/79), I served in her with
my brother and my father continues to relive the 'tiger cruise' of her return to
CONUS. I will retire in Yokosuka with many of our OKC brothers and can only
thank the USN and OKC for the influences made on my in my life. Gohan-san. Yoku

team work bonded many young men and taught them the real meaning of
leadership.
